Als didaktisches Material wurden Bilder seit der frühen Neuzeit eingesetzt; Bilder, die dazu dienten, die Welt mit ihrer Hilfe zu erklären, gibt es selbstverständlich schon länger. Dem Bild wurde eine veranschaulichende Funktion zugeschrieben, oftmals mit der Hoffnung verbunden, den Lernenden einen sowohl weiteren wie auch leichteren Zugang zum Lerngegenstand zu eröffnen. Es stellt sich die Frage, auf welche - historisch unterschiedlichen - Weisen das visuelle Medium einen Lerngegenstand präsentierte und damit auch konstruierte, wie zu unterschiedlichen Zeiten Bild und Wort dabei in Verbindung gestellt wurden, sich ergänzten oder auch widersprachen und auf welche Weise den Lernenden Bilder zugänglich gemacht wurden, was mit den Bildern geschah und wie mit ihnen umgegangen wurde.

Der zweite Workshop der Reihe Pictura Paedagogica Online – Pädagogisches Wissen in Bildern stellt Technik und Methoden in den Mittelpunkt. Mit Neue Perspektiven der visuellen Bildungsgeschichte sollen jüngste Entwicklungen im Bereich Digital Humanities und ihre Auswirkungen auf die wissenschaftliche Praxis diskutiert werden. Der Workshop möchte dabei den Austausch zwischen Gedächtnisinstitutionen sowie Forschenden ermöglichen. Im Zuge der Veranstaltung werden die Weiterentwicklungen von Pictura Paedagogica Online zur Forschungsumgebung thematisiert. Als ein erster Meilenstein auf diesem Weg wird „Interlinking Pictura“ vorgestellt, ein Modellprojekt zur Annotation und semantischer Auswertung von Bildquellen.

One of the characteristic features of modern life is the omnipresence of images - in public life as well as in the private surroundings. At latest with coining the term "Visual history" at the beginning of the nineteen nineties historical disciplines are dealing with this ever growing pool of pictorial sources. This is also true for educational history - especially when keeping in mind that the use of images in an educational context is common practice since early modern ages. 

The 4th workshop of the series "PICTURA paedagogica: Pedagogical knowledge in pictures" is dedicated to picture book illustrations. The aim is to examine the illustrations, designed for children in these special books, in terms of their history, their characteristic forms and their transformation, as a medium for imparting knowledge and – ultimately – in terms of their significance for the formation of literacy, i.e. their ability to understand the world and its representations.

With the emergence of the modern school system in the 19th century, educational collections were founded in numerous countries. Initially, their purpose as teachers' libraries, school museums, and collections of teaching materials was to provide practical support to educators and to contribute to the professionalization of teaching and schools. Steadily growing collections, which then were orientated to the needs of the time, have since differentiated into various branches of memory institutions. Many of today’s educational history museums, libraries, and archives in public ownership originate in associational or private initiatives.
