The Digital Image Archive on the History of Education

The digital image archive PicturaPaedagogica brings together images relevant to the history of education from various eras and regions in a virtual database, systematically catalogues them, and makes them freely accessible to researchers and the public. This supports sustained research on image sources as independent historical evidence in educational studies.

PicturaPaedagogica originated from a project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) for the retro-digitization of library collections. Its core collection was formed through cooperation between the Research Library for the History of Education (Bibliothek für Bildungsgeschichtliche Forschung, BBF) at DIPF in Berlin and the Institute for Applied Educational Science and General Didactics at the University of Hildesheim. The foundation is based on three collections:

the real image archive on the history of education built up at the University of Hildesheim since 1982,
an extensive private postcard collection, and
the "Old Prints" image collection of the BBF.

With the start of DFG funding in January 2000, images were selected, digitized, and systematically catalogued. In May 2001, the archive was first published as the "Virtual Image Archive on the History of Education" and was later renamed "Pictura Paedagogica Online."

Since the end of DFG funding, the archive has been managed, maintained, and continuously expanded by the BBF. In 2020, a comprehensive restructuring took place, migrating the image data to a new data system, completely revising the online presentation, and officially changing the name to PicturaPaedagogica.
